What does it mean when a man says he wants to "lead" in a relationship?

In his case, he wants to be the boss and have her do what he says. Most Christians understand that men and women are different, but can have equal roles in a marriage, but apparently, he's going to be the boss and he doesn't care what she or her family or friends think about this. I'm finding it a little frightening to be honest.
