Is it safe for the dog to eat gr?

our dog doesnt eat it too too much, but my first instinct all the time is to tell him not to eat it. but when i think about it, its just gr. is it safe for him to eat it? there are little buds that fall from our plants that he will eat as well. good? bad? ineffective? thanks for answers!
