What year is the Naruto show supposed to be in?

I mean.. when they were looking for the old man that stole konoha's blueprints they checked some locations on a list with a -paintbrush-.. And.. this is hot lol.. at the beginning of the show naruto sakura sasuke and kakashi were talking using communication microphones! lol. wtf? what year is it supposed to be in?
