Why this strictly-enforced social stereotype for parents?...?

Wow... where do you live? Our son came home in a Ford Escort, and the only thing we found when we came home was a banner that said "Congratulations", or "It's a boy" or some such tacked on the front of the garage. Nobody offered to paint the nursery - I had to do that myself.
